Character Design Class (04)

Character and Environment
Donkey Kong

I used the idea of having a level behind a giant monument of a monkey that would release barrels and fire and things to jump over as you progress up in the platform game.

Character Design Class (03)

Character and Environment
Temperature

Today's character design class was about the settings of characters and their environments. We were told to look to our left at the person sitting next to us and use one of their words that were pointing at. I got 'Temperature' and thought of ways to create something using a high temperature.

On the left I created a boss creature from the influence of bugs and their deference's combined with lava and steam. On the right was our second task to create an existing character in a different environment. I got Lara Croft and Ancient Rome. I imagined something very similar to a female Assassins Creed.

Character Silhouettes
Mad Scientist

During yesterdays character design class I was given a Mad Scientist to create silhouettes to convey form and structure. To make these silhouettes better I could make the body language stronger.

Game Design: Metal Gear Solid & Mouse Trap Game Ideas

Today's first character design lesson was straight after our character design briefing. To help us out with ideas we were given two cards with different types of existing games on them. Our task was to create another game based on the concepts of the pre-existing games.

The two games I were given was Metal Gear Solid & Mouse Trap, so I bullet pointed the general concepts of both games and made a list of the strongest parts of each game that I could take forward and apply to my one.

(Stealth Hiding Sneaky Armour Powers Weaponry)

(Mechanical Bright Mice Escaping Running Traps/Ladders)

The game I come up with would be a Player Vs Player environment, player one being the mice and player two being the evil mastermind. Player one has to try sneak into the factory without being seen by the evil masterminds forces and escape with the ''bounty'' - player two would set up traps for player one to fall into and try and stop he/she from escaping.

Character Design Class: (4) Environment

Character Design Class (4)
Environment

During Wednesdays Character Design Class, we talked about how environments and how they effect the story just as much as the character. So our task began when we were given 2 words to create a villains and hero's ''lair'' from.

<FOREST and SWAMP>

My two words were 'Forest' and 'Swamp';
I had to brainstorm ideas about possible storylines and how these spaces could be evolved.

The story I had began to think of was:

My idea was about these 'high bird' characters living near the tops of of ginormous trees in a forest.
They overlooked the barrens that surround the swamp, just visible over the horizon.

The birds were 'purists'. Only cared about beauty and wealth.
They would look down on anyone else apart from there own kind.
They lived the 'high' life, had no care in the world.
The home that live in would be formed from the trees, spiraling together and graceful.

The creatures living within the swamp would be humble creatures.
They would be living in muck and filth, working hard for the birds.
Threatened to do as they were told to spare the lives of their families.

Character Design Class (3.0): Bob Godfrey

Bob Godfrey Quick Sketches

During last weeks character creation class, we had an extra task to draw a class member quickly in the 'Grotesk' style of Bob Godfrey.

Maj

I was partnered with Maj. So I wrote down her most defining features and got stuck in. His style is very quick and careless, so that's what I had tried to imitate.

Character Design Class: (3) Character & Prop

Character Design Class (3)
Character & Prop

Earlier this week on Wednesday (24th) we were told to focus on Character and the usage of Hero Props. Our first task was to create a weapon/prop for the character that we were given.

I had the cartoon character Danger Mouse, and here are my prop design pages.

My final design was the ''Net-o-Mouse''!
It would shoot of a net that would be allocated on Danger Mouse's forearm.

Our second task was to use our item that we brought in from home and to re-design it and make a character from it. I had a Harmonica, and I instantly thought of an old man/Blues man in a pub of some kind.He would be chilled out, with a whistle in his words when he speaks, and would wear a very large ''Blues Man'' slanting over his face.

Character Design Class: (2) Shapes

Character Design Class (2)
Shapes

In this afternoons character design class, we talked about shapes and how these shapes give of a meaning to us humans. For example, how squares are seen as strong, sturdy shapes, and triangles as dangers and sharp objects.

I applied this method to Christopher Robin's character 'Tigger'.

SPACE TROOPER

As a second task, we were all given a ''type'' of hero, and I had to create a Line Up of 3 suspects to do with that specific category.

After a lot of sketchy ideas, I finally came up with a female robot, main hero/savior/spaceman and a mastermind.

This was the semi-finished character of my female robot.

Character Design Class: (1) Style

Character Design Class (1)
Creating Characters in a Style

This afternoons Character Design class evolved the study of other styles and how and why we like them. I had Mickey Mouse and Batman (Comic) as a style to use when re-creating my chosen character. Crash Bandicoot.

Each drawing took around 2-5 minutes. Micky Mouse in th style of Crash, and Crash in the style of Batman.
